I got to Fort St. John later in the day from Dawson Creek. A few people from Dawson Creek told me there's a rivalry between these two cities but I don't see it. Although Fort St. John is bigger than Dawson Creek with about 20,000 people, Dawson Creek at least has the Alaska Highway Mile 0 Marker that draws tourists. When I got to Fort St. John on a Saturday evening, it felt like a ghost town. I got a hotel near the center of town was except for one restaurant that seemed to draw a crowd, the rest of this area was pretty dead. I walked to a discount grocery store to buy a bag salad because living on a road diet of burgers, pizzas, coffee, and sampling local delicacies was giving me early stages of diabetes. It was a quiet night at my hotel with my bag salad and that was alright with me.

The next morning I found the local coffee spot, got a cup and drank it in the parking lot while an older man on his electric scooter rolled up to me and chatted me up about living in Fort St. John and his retirement riding scooters, seeing his grand kids and going south for the winter. Not a bad way to spend your retirement.
